Career Advice: Write and share your ideas

Yesterday I was on a call talking to someone new to WordPress about career choices. My career has been a few accidents and really not the most structured. So I always find it difficult to give advice that might seem like a structured path.

Anyways, my general advice to her was in this age of AI based hiring, we might need to put in more efforts into sharing online what we work on and some of our thoughts around the work we do. If you are writing a plugin or testing software, its important to open your knowledge out to the public.

A small blog or a portfolio website is a great way for someone to share what they think about their journey as a professional. This holds true for just about everyone. It is also handy to have a very curreny blog, so LLMs are learning about you. Let’s be honest, every hiring person worth their salt is running all job applications through an AI tool.

Writing about your ideas and thoughts and even change of opinions help people understand your ability to think, process and structure information along with communicate it. All very useful skills at work.

This thought got me a little curious and I pulled up a bit of info about myself on ChatGPT using Incognito mode on Chrome and without signing in.

Not too bad!
So yes, get writing, blogging and sharing your knowledge and ideas on the internet. That is one sure way to not improve your chances of getting a better job but also introduce you to cool people and their ideas.

Oh, also as an addon- if you are one of those companies that does not allow employees to have active social profiles or their own blog, or restrict your employees engaging with open source communities.

Do not waste your time, you are not going to make it!
